Candace Owens Blindsided With Devastating News

Unexpectedly, the Daily Wire secured a gag order against Candace Owens, its former anchor, when Owens and Ben Shapiro were publicly negotiating a debate on Israel and antisemitism. Journalist Glenn Greenwald, a Pulitzer Prize winner, broke the story first.

Known for her outspoken style, Candace Owens quit the Daily Wire in March due to differences of opinion over her assessments of Israel’s military activities in Gaza, which she called “genocidal,” and the U.S. government’s sponsorship of the country. The incidents prepared the audience for a contentious public discussion that was anticipated to end in a confrontation between Daily Wire co-founder and ardent pro-Israeli advocate Shapiro and Owens.

The public was keen to witness the debate, and at first, all sides were willing to have an honest conversation about such a divisive subject. Shapiro even suggested that he broadcast the debate on his program without a moderator. Owens, on the other hand, recommended that well-known individuals like Joe Rogan or Lex Fridman moderate in order to provide an impartial forum. The debate never happened in spite of these negotiations.

The Daily Wire was working behind the scenes to legally stop Owens from saying anything in public that would be interpreted as disparaging the business or Shapiro. The gag order was requested through a private arbitrator, according to Greenwald’s account, who said that Owens’ public appeal for a debate and her social media activity were disparaging. The arbitrator took the Daily Wire’s side and imposed a gag order that prevents Owens from challenging Shapiro’s or the Daily Wire’s motivations, essentially delaying any plans for the discussion.

As Glenn Greenwald put it:

But the debate was never going to happen. That is because the Daily Wire — in secret and unbeknownst to its readers — sought a gag order to be placed on Owens after she had called for a debate. They did this under the cover of secrecy, before a private arbitrator, at exactly the same time that they were claiming in public that they wanted this debate and were even negotiating the terms with her. To this date, the Daily Wire has not informed its readers, seeking to understand why the much-anticipated debate had not yet happened, that they had sought and obtained a gag order against Owens.

When seeking a gag order to be imposed on Owens, the Daily Wire accused her of violating the non-disparagement clause of her agreement with the company. To substantiate this accusation, the company specifically cited Owens’ initial tweet requesting a debate with Shapiro as proof of this disparagement, along with concerns she voiced that Shapiro appeared to be violating the confidentiality agreement between them by publicly maligning Owens’s views to explain her departure from the company. While the company claimed before the arbitrator that it did not object in principle to a “healthy debate,” it urged the imposition of gag order on Owens by claiming that the way she requested the debate constituted disparagement of Shapiro and the site.

According to the story, The Daily Wire alleged that Owens had violated her contract’s non-disparagement clause in its request for a gag order against her. The corporation also reinforced its argument for the gag order by linking to various complaints of both the Daily Wire and Shapiro on X, which Owens had encouraged by commenting with the post.

In response to a request for a commentary for Greenwald’s piece, Owens said, “I wish I could comment on this but I can’t.” “Can neither confirm nor deny,” she added.

Boreing said, “Your story is inaccurate to the point of being false,” but he did not identify any specific inaccuracies, nor did he refute that the Daily Wire had secured a gag order on Owens while simultaneously claiming to seek a debate with her. Boreing further noted, “I’m sure you can appreciate how fraught a high profile break-up like this is. For that reason, we are trying to resolve our issues with Candace privately.”
