On Thursday, Vice President Kamala Harris and her running mate, Governor Tim Walz, were on a multi-day trip of the swing state when their motorcade was cut short by a violent motorcycle accident.

According to the Daily Caller, the Secret Service clarified that members of the Savannah Police Department were accompanying the couple as part of their security detail when one of their officers sustained “serious injuries” and collapsed with his bike. According to a statement from the police, this was a “single-vehicle accident” that happened at approximately 7 p.m. Eastern time. Savannah Police Corporal David Bates was the casualty. Gov. Walz was involved in an accident while riding in a tour bus. SPD Chief Lenny B. Gunther said in the statement, “The Savannah Police Department is supporting Corporal Bates and his family as he begins his recovery from injuries sustained in this vehicle accident.”

Fox 5 Atlanta captured motionless pictures of the chaotic situation while other police attended to their fallen comrade. There were obvious bloodstains on the ground beneath Bates’s body. According to the department’s statement, it will help him along what looks to be a challenging recovery path. The statement said, “We will be by his side every step of the way.” Bates “sustained serious injuries,” it continues, and was transported to Memorial Health University Medical Center for additional treatment. They stated, “He continues to receive treatment and is in a stable condition.”

“The Secret Service is aware of an incident that occurred during a motorcade movement yesterday,” Special Agent in Charge of the U.S. Secret Service’s Atlanta Field Office Frederick D. Houston said in the statement. The lead agent for Harris’s entourage said the motorcade would continue on to its next stop as planned. He added, “The movement was not affected by the incident. We are thankful for the support of our law enforcement partners and wish Corporal David Bates a full and speedy recovery.” There were no instant facts available regarding the accident’s cause.

As Harris canvasses southern Georgia in an attempt to win over dark voters, who will account for one in three ballots come November, the accident is a dark mark on her record. After completing a solo rally in Savannah, she spent the next two days visiting small business owners, Liberty County High School, and a southern BBQ restaurant. In 2020, she hopes to accomplish what President Joe Biden did, which was to turn the state blue. According to ABC News, the latest polls indicate that Trump and Harris are tied at 46.6% to 46%.

After sitting down for a joint CNN interview with Harris on Thursday, Walz left for a solitary rally with a firefighters’ union in Massachusetts. On September 10th, Harris and Trump are scheduled to participate in their first debate.
