Former President Barack Obama has expressed strong criticism towards his former vice president, stating to his supporters in recent days that President Joe Biden is not effectively managing the consequences of his disastrous debate performance. Obama believes that Biden’s actions are putting the Democrats’ ability to prevent former President Donald Trump from returning to the White House at risk.

The Washington Post has documented private discussions in which the 44th president purportedly acknowledged that Biden’s chances of winning have become even more limited after last week’s disastrous debate with Trump. During the debate, Biden appeared unresponsive, slow to react, and failed to seize opportunities to confront President Trump regarding his actions and statements. According to many sources knowledgeable about Obama’s comments, his faith in Biden is waning, despite reaching out to Biden to discuss his opinions and provide support for the president’s strategic planning. It remains uncertain whether Obama explicitly commented on Biden’s debate performance.

“President Biden is grateful for President Obama’s unwavering support since the very start of this campaign as both a powerful messenger to voters and a trusted adviser directly to the president,” Lauren Hitt, a spokeswoman for the Biden campaign, said in a statement to the Post.

Following the June 27th debate, Biden and his supporters have made efforts to reassure significant contributors and party officials regarding the president’s mental sharpness and likelihood of winning in November. President Obama, who did not provide a comment on the most recent reports, expressed his concerns about the state of the campaign even before the debate, according to sources. Nevertheless, this has not deterred him from actively advocating for Biden on various social media platforms and during campaign events, including a prestigious New York fundraiser he spoke at on Friday.
“Bad debate nights happen,” Obama wrote on social media after the debate. “Trust me, I know. But this election is still a choice between someone who has fought for ordinary folks his entire life and someone who only cares about himself. Between someone who tells the truth; who knows right from wrong and will give it to the American people straight — and someone who lies through his teeth for his own benefit. Last night didn’t change that, and it’s why so much is at stake in November.”
During a private lunch at the White House in December, President Obama voiced his concerns about the Democratic Party’s capacity to overcome a newly emboldened Trump. This anxiety emerged as Trump seemed to be benefiting from the attention surrounding his numerous criminal convictions. The former president suggested that Biden appoint more senior decision-makers inside his campaign apparatus, so facilitating faster response times. Following a period of one month, Jennifer O’Malley Dillon and Mike Donilon, who were important assistants, departed from the White House in order to join the campaign headquarters located in Wilmington, Delaware.
In the previous month, Obama made an appearance at a glamorous Hollywood fundraiser, which generated a substantial sum of $28 million for Biden’s campaign for reelection. Short recordings that were captured at the event depicted Biden appearing disoriented on stage as he was escorted away by his former superior, who placed a hand in the center of his back to direct him towards the exit.
