The whirling maelstrom of British royal intrigue has brought back accusations of Prince William having an affair with Kate Middleton’s pal. Once again, Rose Hanbury, the Marchioness of Cholmondeley, is at the center of a controversy that casts doubt on the principles behind royal fidelity.

Rose Hanbury’s grandmother was a bridesmaid at the wedding of Queen Elizabeth II, hence she has a family connection to the House of Windsor. With their estates located just a few miles apart in the gorgeous Norfolk countryside, Hanbury and the Cambridge family have close social and geographic relations. Hanbury is married to David Rocksavage, the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley. For many years, she was also good friends with Kate Middleton.

Because of their close closeness, Prince William and Kate have developed a bond that has been both praised and closely examined. This is especially true in light of the rumors surrounding their connection and the family’s long-standing suspicion of Prince William and Hanbury having an affair.

Following Kate Middleton’s protracted seclusion from the public eye following stomach surgery, which sparked wild conjecture and rumor-mongering, the mystery grew more intense. A seemingly innocent Mother’s Day portrait issued by Kensington Palace became a lightning rod for criticism against this backdrop.

After it was discovered that the photo, which showed Kate Middleton with her kids, may have been altered digitally, there was more conjecture regarding the Duchess’s location and marital status. The Princess issued an apology for the photo editing, which unintentionally escalated the debate about her health and the veracity of her publicly disclosed private moments.

In a skit on “The Late Show,” Stephen Colbert playfully highlighted the alleged affair, demonstrating the kind of attention that this story has received outside of the United Kingdom.

“Now there have been rumors of an affair between William and the marching band of chicanery since 2019. According to tabloids back then, when Kate supposedly confronted him about it, he laughed it off, saying there was nothing to it,” Colbert said.

All sides have remained respectfully silent on the subject, even though it makes for exciting news for tabloids and social media investigators. In an effort to calm the fury, Kensington Palace remained quiet while the Cambridges made calculated public appearances and sent out messages. But the absence of an official announcement has just helped to keep the rumor and speculation mill going.

In his latest publication, “Endgame: Inside the Royal Family and the Monarchy’s Fight for Survival,” royal commentator Omid Scobie introduced the topic to Entertainment Tonight. “Unfortunately, if a rumor’s left to kind of do its own thing it can run 20 laps around the world before you even think about what, how you want to kind of address it,” the royal commentator and writer shared with ET.

“They never addressed it, so those rumors will never go away even though there’s no truth to suggest that they are true.”

“I was very careful in the book to really focus on this, as the allegations against William, Kate, and their fallout with Rose Hanbury,” Scobie said. “For legal reasons there are so many things that one can’t go into but I thought it was really important, even if a rumor is a rumor. And I really don’t see proof that there is more to this than just a tittle-tattle, you know.”

“The worst case scenarios that they feared would happen, you know, just those rumors themselves were going to have enough impact, negatively, on William’s reputation.”

The royal source added, “We still see them [the rumors] trend on Twitter on a regular basis … that’s something that’s incredibly damaging, I think, for William. It probably looks even worse, actually, that there was a kind of willingness to throw Harry under the bus simply to make these things disappear.”
